Two outstanding physicians at St. Mary’s General Hospital are the recipients of the 2010 Lackner Award for Medical Excellence. Dr. Brian Bell and Dr. Anil Nagpal were chosen from this year’s nominees to receive the prestigious award, which was presented Tuesday, November 2 at the hospital’s Annual Community Update.
The Lackner Award for Medical Excellence was established to commemorate, recognize and honour the eighty years of service to the St. Mary’s Mission and Vision by Dr. Harry Lackner, his son Dr. Allister Lackner, and grandson Dr. John Lackner.
It is presented annually to a physician who demonstrates excellence in patient care, innovation, compassion for the individual, and a commitment to the mission of St. Mary’s and the values of the St. Joseph’s Health System.
Dr.Nagpal is a Respirologist and has worked at St. Mary’s since 2000. “Dr. Nagpal’s approachability and responsiveness to the needs of patients and their families is respected by all those he cares for,” says Rob Way, Chair of the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees.
Dr. Brian Bell is a Hospitalist and Emergency Medicine Physician, and has worked at St. Mary’s since 1999. Mr. Way describes Dr. Bell as “an extremely thorough and compassionate physician who treats patients, family and staff with kindness and respect. In addition, he has also given beyond the scope of this hospital by travelling overseas to assist in the care of the less fortunate, living our Mission and Values.”
While this award has historically been presented to one physician, this year’s selection committee felt that, based on the content of the nominations, both of these physicians were deserving of this award.
