St. Mary’s Expands Visiting Hours to Encourage Family Involvement in Patient Care

November 17th, 2014

November 17, 2014 (Kitchener) – Beginning today, St. Mary’s General Hospital has expanded its visiting hours to further encourage families to be involved in the care of their loved ones. The new hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily, a change from the previous 1:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.

The expanded access comes after several months of consultation with patients, families, staff and physicians who welcome enhanced opportunities for families to visit and to speak with care providers.

“We recognize that families play an important role in the healing and well-being of patients and we welcome them to be involved in their loved one’s care,” says Terry Boshart, Manager of Professional Practice and Patient Safety.

The extended visiting hours will allow families to visit during the morning when access is best to physicians and other members of the team caring for admitted patients. “We hope to build on existing efforts to enhance patient education and discharge planning,” says Mr. Boshart. “This aligns with the St. Mary’s vision of becoming the safest and most effective hospital in Canada,” he adds.

Because rest is also vital to healing and wellness, visitors are asked to respect the patient rest period of 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and refrain from visiting during that time. Individual exceptions to our visiting hours may be made at the discretion of the patient’s care team, depending on need.

Visitors are also asked to:

  • Comply with the two-visitor-per patient policy
  • Check in with the nursing station the first time they visit the patient to learn about any specific restrictions
  • Be aware that additional visitor restrictions are put in place during outbreaks to prevent illness from spreading
  • Refrain from visiting when they are sick
  • Clean their hands on entering and exiting the unit
  • Respect St. Mary’s scent free policy and refrain from wearing scented products
  • Note that for security reasons, the main entrance door is locked from 9:00 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. daily. During this period, visitors will need to follow special instructions to access patient areas other than the emergency department.
