Manulife Financial LPGA Classic selects St. Mary’s

Manulife Financial LPGA Classic selects St. Mary’s General Hospital as its official charity partner

Waterloo – The Manulife Financial LPGA Classic is pleased to announce that St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation of Kitchener, Ontario has been chosen as the official charity partner of the tournament for the next three years. The inaugural Manulife Financial LPGA Classic is scheduled to take place June 20-24, 2012 at Grey Silo Golf Course in Waterloo.

As the official charity partner, the St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation will receive a portion of the tournament proceeds to enhance the hospital’s volunteer program and support it’s Regional Cardiac Care Centre while providing the opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of women’s heart health.

In the coming weeks the tournament partners – Manulife Financial and Sports Properties International – will be working closely with St. Mary’s to develop a number of tournament-related charitable programs that will engage the local community in supporting this important charity.

 Since St. Mary’s General Hospital began providing cardiac care in 2001, Manulife Financial has been one of the Regional Cardiac Care Centre’s key philanthropic partners; contributing more than $2.5 million to support patient care.

“Manulife has been a vital partner in enabling St. Mary’s to become one of the province’s preeminent providers of cardiac care,” shared Peter Sweeney, President of the St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation. “We’re thrilled that they will continue to invest in the heart health of our community.”

Tournament’s charitable benefits to help enhance St. Mary’s volunteer program

In addition to promoting heart health, Manulife Financial and St. Mary’s Hospital share a common commitment to volunteerism which makes this charitable partnership a great fit.

St. Mary’s General Hospital has worked hard to develop programs that have meaningful impact for volunteers, patients and their families. Volunteers at St. Mary’s General Hospital contribute nearly 40,000 hours of support every year, in more than 100 different volunteer programs ranging in areas from retail operations to patient support.

“We have a history of seeking new and exciting ways to incorporate volunteers into our culture,” said Don Shilton, President of St. Mary’s General Hospital. “This is the first time that an organization has pledged funds to support volunteerism as a strategic role within the hospital. It’s an innovative, forward-thinking investment that will enable us to take our vision of volunteerism to new heights.”

Tournament set to generate economic, charitable and volunteer benefits

In addition to the charitable benefits the tournament will provide to St. Mary’s General Hospital, the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic will generate approximately $26 million in economic spinoffs and bring 1,200 volunteers together to help build the tournament from the ground up. All 1,200 volunteer positions were filled within 30 hours of opening to the public – something which usually takes 3-6 months to accomplish.

“Raising money for charity and making a lasting impact on local communities is one of the main objectives of the LPGA and its tournaments,” noted Richard Kuypers, Manulife Financial LPGA Classic Tournament Director. “Given the success we have already seen in tickets sales and the overwhelming response we received from the community when we asked for tournament volunteers, we are confident the people of Waterloo Region will come together to support such an important local charity as St. Mary’s General Hospital.”
