Today, I am thrilled to share with you that your generosity is having an impact.
Diagnosing colon cancer is always upsetting for my patient and me, for it is the beginning of a challenging journey. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Canada and yet, in many cases, it is preventable. If it is diagnosed at an early stage, it is curable in 90% of cases.
Two years ago, I asked for your help in combatting a killer disease. You responded quickly and generously by donating $1.2 million dollars in 8 weeks. We put that money to use swiftly by expanding our endoscopy suites here at St. Mary’s. My colleagues and I have a greater capacity to both prevent and detect colon cancer at an earlier stage. Your generosity has allowed us to reduce our wait time by 25% and we can now see 1,700 more patients every year.
Because of your generous contribution to this project, there will be people in our community who will not develop colon cancer, or who will survive this common illness.
Your support has provided our community with this excellent facility. It is one that is deeply appreciated by our patients, my fellow physicians and our staff. Because of your generous contribution to this project, there will be people in our community who will not develop colon cancer, or who will survive this common illness.
You have made a significant and enduring difference to the health of our community through your philanthropy. To be able to tell a patient that their future is bright after those first fearful days and weeks is one of the most joyful moments in medicine.
